Bark beetles (including Ips species) can occur in a variety of hardwoods and conifers.  The adult beetles are small and dark colored, but the larvae are small whitish grubs that tunnel beaneath the bark of trees.  They are strongly associated with stressed trees and trees that have recently died.  The distinctive feature is the abundance of narrow tunnels beneath the bark.
