White-lined Sphinx
White Line Sphinx
The hornworm pictured is the caterpillar of the white-lined sphinx moth. The larvae feed on many different plants including purslane, grape, apple, herbs and four o’clock. The larvae is about 3 inches long and burrows into the ground to transform into the adult hawk moth. Adults are often seen at dusk feeding on the nectar of flowers. They are often mistaken for humming birds.
